Mac students work alongside faculty in the lab and in the field—and publish the results.
At major universities, doing research and writing articles with faculty members are opportunities confined to graduate students—but not at Macalester.
Here, motivated undergraduates regularly work alongside professors researching topics as varied as freshwater mussels and Filipino migration. After the research is done, many of these students also become co-authors on papers published in academic journals—an opportunity their peers at larger institutions can only dream of.
The students relish these opportunities and their professor co-authors enjoy it, too. Says Geology Department chair and assistant professor Kelly MacGregor, “It’s amazing to usher students through the process of discovery, to watch them take hold of a project as their own, and to move those discoveries toward a peer-reviewed publication.” Adds her colleague, assistant professor Kristi Curry Rogers, “Working through the process of publishing a paper really lets students experience what it’s like to be a scientist. Getting this experience at the undergraduate level is a great opportunity to learn the language and method early on in a career.”
Following is a partial list of papers Mac students have co-authored in the last few years. While the list is by no means exhaustive, it provides an indication of the breadth of scholarship being done by
faculty and students. Not every title may be immediately understandable to the layperson, but the effort and accomplishment behind them? That should be crystal clear.
