St. Paul, Minn. - Kate Ryan Reiling, a 2000 Macalester graduate, has been named Entrepreneur in Residence, a new position at the college.

“Macalester’s 2014 Strategic Plan calls for an emphasis on entrepreneurship as an outgrowth of our urban location, our accomplished alumni, and the interests of our students,” said President Brian Rosenberg.  “Kate is a natural fit for Entrepreneur in Residence, given her own entrepreneurial career and her deep knowledge of Macalester.  I look forward to having her on board.”

In her new role, Ryan Reiling will oversee and coordinate the various existing components of Macalester’s entrepreneurship program including the Macathon, Mac Startups, and the Live It Fund.  She will also help create new entrepreneurial programs, partnering with different areas of the college, such as the Career Development Center, the Internship Office, Alumni Relations, and academic departments, as they move to strengthen entrepreneurship at Macalester.

Ryan Reiling will teach one course per semester focused on entrepreneurship.  Proposed courses include Intro to Social Entrepreneurship in the International Studies Department this fall and
Introduction to Entrepreneurship in the Economics Department in the spring.  Some of her other duties will be to engage alumni, parents, and members of the business, social sector, and entrepreneurial communities in the Twin Cities with the entrepreneurship work at Macalester.

“Kate’s experience lends itself well to her teaching entrepreneurship at Macalester,” said Karine Moe, Provost and Dean of the Faculty. “Her energy and ideas will be a great asset to our students.”

Ryan Reiling has been teaching entrepreneurship at Macalester for a year, before that, she founded Morphology Games in 2009.  In 2010, TIME magazine named Morphology the #2 Toy of the Year. The startup scaled quickly and Ryan Reiling was responsible for all facets of growth leading to its successful licensing in 2013. She then joined InboxDollars, a local tech startup as Director of Product and a member of the leadership team.  Early in her career, she worked in the non-profit sector as Development and Program Manager for Spare Key of Minnesota and Director of Programs and Outreach for the Minnesota Thunder PLUS.  She currently serves as co-chair on the Breakthrough Twin Cities’ board.

She received her MBA from The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and her BA from Macalester where she was a Political Science major, a 3-time All-American soccer player and national champion.

The funding for this position comes from college donors. Ryan Reiling will start August 1.
