Sherman Fairchild Foundation awards Macalester $487K for scientific equipment

The Sherman Fairchild Foundation has awarded Macalester College a four-year, $487K grant for scientific equipment to enhance the college’s imaging resources. The equipment will be used in courses and research opportunities across multiple departments.

Physician and medical anthropologist Paul Farmer will deliver the commencement address at the 2014 Macalester College graduation ceremony. Lucy Andrews, of Plymouth, Minn., is the senior class speaker. Andrews is a Geology major and captain of the Women's Track and Field Team.

Sociology student awarded a top place in national competition

Macalester senior Mara Aussendorf of Bainbridge Island, Wash., has won third place in the 2014 national Alpha Kappa Delta Undergraduate Paper Competition with her paper titled “The Birdhouse and the Bee Hive: Parents’ Navigation of Successful Sexual Socialization.” Alpha Kappa Delta, the honors society for sociology, sponsors the annual undergraduate paper competition that receives entries from across the country. This award marks the fourth consecutive year that Macalester sociology majors have earned the top prizes from Alpha Kappa Delta.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet to speak at Macalester

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet will speak to the Macalester College community on Sunday, March 2, 2014. His talk is titled, “The Nature of Happiness, Fulfillment, and Embodiment.” Seating for the event will be limited and tickets will not be available to the general public. The event will be free for the campus community but tickets will be required. More information will be shared with the campus community when tickets are available.

Choral Director McGaghie selected as an ACDA ICEP Conducting Fellow

Macalester Music Professor and Director of Choral Activities Michael McGaghie has been selected for the 2014 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) International Conductors Exchange Program (ICEP). He is one of seven conductors chosen from a competitive nationwide application pool to spend two weeks in China conducting choirs in that country this summer.

Two Seniors Receive Minnesota High Tech Association STEM scholarships

Two Macalester seniors, Eric Biggers from Verona, Wis., and Nathan Leech of Mound, Minn., have received the Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) Foundation annual scholarships awarded to undergraduate students who excel in programs geared toward science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Only 15 students across the state of Minnesota received the award.

Governor Dayton Appoints Mac Professor to Council on MLK Jr. Holiday

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton announced the appointment of Macalester Professor Duchess Harris to the Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. Harris’ term is effective immediately and will extend through March 1, 2014. She replaces Cheryl Chatman.
