Macalester Sociology Graduate Wins National Paper Competition

The American Sociological Association: Sociology of Law Section has given its Undergraduate Paper Award to Mary Pheng of Richfield, Minn., a 2013 Macalester Sociology graduate. Pheng received the award for her paper “The Bureaucratic Savior: How Human Service Professionals Allocate Rights to Noncitizens.” The award will be presented during the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association this August in New York.
Macalester Math professor receives a SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has chosen a paper co-written by Macalester Math Prof. Chad Topaz and Prof. Andrew Bernoff of Harvey Mudd College for one of three outstanding paper prizes in 2013. Their paper, A Primer of Swarm Equilibria, SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems Vol. 10, Issue 1 (2011), pp. 212-250, will also reappear as a "SIGEST" article in SIAM Review, the society's flagship journal.
