Mathematics students win four prizes at national meeting

Four posters contributed by Macalester summer research students received an Outstanding Presentation Award at the 2013 MAA Undergraduate Student Poster Session last month at the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego.  The awardees include seniors Hossein Alidaee, Mike Reeks, and Maxray Savage, who, along with seven other undergraduate student researchers, developed their mathematics research last summer. They were mentored by Macalester Mathematics professors Andrew Beveridge, Dan Flath and Tom Halverson. Alidaee and Reeks did independent research at Macalester, while Savage was part of MAXIMA, a 12-student REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) that is co-hosted by Macalester and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota.

Macalester to host 14th annual American Studies Conference “Alternatives in a changing food world”

“Alternatives in a changing food world” is the topic University of Maryland Prof. Psyche Williams-Forson will discuss as the keynote speaker at the 14th Annual American Studies Conference at Macalester College, Feb.21-22. The conference also features a film screening of Byron Hurt’s Soul Food Junkies, a conversation with the filmmaker, and a food drive.

Climate-change expert Bill McKibben coming to St. Thomas and Macalester

Bill McKibben, one of the nation’s best-known environmental journalists and an expert on global warming, will visit the University of St. Thomas and Macalester College Feb. 20 and 21 for a series of lectures and programs titled “Celebrating and Preserving Winter: Responding to Climate Change in Minnesota and Wisconsin.” 

Macalester earns spot on Peace Corps’ annual Top Schools rankings

For the eighth year in a row, Macalester College has earned a spot on Peace Corps’ annual list of the top volunteer-producing small colleges and universities across the country. With 15 alumni currently serving overseas as Peace Corps volunteers, the school ranks No. 18 and remains a solid source of individuals committed to making a difference at home and abroad. Since the agency was created in 1961, 350 Macalester graduates have served as Peace Corps volunteers.

Sociology major wins second place in MSS Paper Competition

The Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) has awarded IndiAna Gowland ’13, of Mill Valley, Calif., second place in its 49th Annual Student Paper Competition.

Exhibition: "Ornament and Crime: Parastou Forouhar" in Macalester’s Law Warschaw Gallery

Iranian-born, internationally known artist, Parastou Forouhar, presented a solo exhibition at Macalester’s Law Warschaw Gallery.  The exhibition, “Ornament and Crime,” opened Fri., Feb. 8 and was curated by Joanna Inglot, chair and associate professor of Macalester’s Art and Art History department.

Theatre and Dance Department Presents Hip Hop Hopes

The Macalester College Theatre and Dance Department presents Hip Hop Hopes: What’s Going On? in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Main Stage Theater, 1600 Grand Ave., St. Paul, Minn. Tickets are $7 general admission and $5 for seniors and groups. There are two performances at 7 and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, February 15, 16, 22, & 23. Leland and Kathleen Hansen Establish Geography Research Endowed Fund

Leland and Kathleen Hansen of St. Paul have established a $100,000 research endowed fund at Macalester College.  It will be named the Leland and Kathleen Hansen Geography Research Endowed Fund and support student research in urban geography.
