Macalester Alumnus wins 2012 Hugo Award for comic “Digger”

Ursula Vernon, author of the popular children’s book series “Dragonbreath” and a 1998 Macalester Anthropology graduate, has received her first nomination for a Hugo award for her comic “Digger.”
In the world of astrophysics, the evolution of galaxies remains one of the great, unsolved mysteries. Macalester Professor John Cannon has received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for over $295,000 to try to discover how a certain curious type of galaxy changes over time.
Macalester Receives $354,500 Mellon Grant for Student Fellowships

Macalester College has received a $354,500 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York to continue its Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) Program through the 2014-2015 academic year. Now in its twelfth year at Macalester, MMUF aims to reduce the serious underrepresentation of minorities in the faculty ranks of institutions of higher learning by encouraging minority students to earn PhDs.
Macalester College opposes Minnesota marriage amendment

The Macalester College Board of Trustees voted Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, to oppose the constitutional amendment going before Minnesota voters in November that would define marriage as being between one man and one woman.
On the same day the Macalester community celebrated the opening of the music building and arts commons, the college’s Board of Trustees launched the next step in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center’s comprehensive renovation and expansion by approving the plans and timeline for the studio art building. Construction will begin in January 2013, with the project scheduled for completion in January 2014.
