Her talk begins at 4:45 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Intimacy and Belonging: The Association between Sexual Activity and Depression among Older Adults

Kathryn Ganong, a 2010 Macalester alumnae and graduate student at Boston College, and Macalester Sociology Prof. Erik Larson have discovered sexual activity that typically incorporates other forms of physical intimacy has a robust association with lower depression for both women and men. In spite of popular perceptions that sex might matter more for men, they found no significant difference in this association between men and women. They recently published their findings in the journal Society and Mental Health.

Macalester senior Derek Ochi named AMGEN Fellow

Macalester Senior Derek Ochi has been named one of 100 Amgen Fellows selected from incoming Teach For America corps members with undergraduate degrees in Math and Science. Ochi has been accepted as a 2012 Teach For America corps member and the San Diego native will begin teaching in Los Angeles next fall.

Sociology Majors Awarded All Three Prizes in Midwest Sociological Society Paper Competitions

Senior sociology majors Jeremy Carp, Kate Lanning, and Chloe Souza have won the top three prizes at the 48th Annual Midwest Sociological Society Student Paper Competition.  Carp received first prize, Lanning placed second, and Souza was awarded third prize by the Midwest Sociological Society.

Macalester Earns Place on Peace Corps’ Annual Top Colleges Rankings

Since the Peace Corps began in 1961, 343 Macalester alumni have served, and for the seventh year in a row, Macalester has placed on the Peace Corps’ list of top colleges nationwide producing Peace Corps volunteers.  With 18 alumni currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, Macalester is No. 15 in this year’s rankings among small-sized colleges and universities.
