Macalester is holding its second Macathon, a mash-up of a computer hackathon and a business start-up competition 4:00 p.m., Fri., Feb. 28, ending at 7:30 p.m. Sat., March 1.
15th Annual American Studies Conference at Macalester

This year’s conference with the theme, “Mixed Race America: Identities and Culture” features two keynote speakers: Laura Kina, a visual artist, curator and Vincent de Paul Associate Professor of Art, Media, & Design at DePaul University, will talk about “Mixed Race Asian American Art: On Becoming and Unbecoming a ‘Happy Hapa,’” and Ralina L. Joseph, associate professor in the University of Washington’s Department of Communication and in the Departments of American Ethnic Studies and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, will talk about “Does ‘Mixed’ Mean Post-Race? - An Examination of 21st Century Media Representations of African American Multiraciality.”
Macalester College jumped 15 positions to No. 3 on Peace Corps’ annual list of the top volunteer-producing small colleges and universities across the country, making the ninth year in a row the college has made the list. Currently, 16 alumni are serving overseas in the Peace Corps, and since the agency was created in 1961, 356 Macalester graduates have made a difference as Peace Corps volunteers.

The Macalester College Theatre and Dance Department presents Bertolt Brecht’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Main Stage Theater, 1600 Grand Ave., St. Paul, Minn. Macalester College New Music Series Presents Lorelei Ensemble

Dedicated to the performance of new and early music for women’s voices, the Lorelei Ensemble consists of nine professional musicians whose expertise ranges from early to contemporary repertoire. They’ll perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 2014, in Mairs Concert Hall, in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center & Gallery, 1600 Grand Ave, St. Paul, Minn. They are part of Macalester’s New Music Series, sponsored by the Rivendell Foundation.
Peter Happel Christian makes art about the experience of nature, time, and perception at the intersection of photography, sculpture, and performance. His exhibition, “Sword of the Sun,” opens Friday, February 7, with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Law Warschaw Gallery, 130 Macalester Street, St. Paul, Minn. The exhibition runs from February 7 - March 14. Gallery hours: Monday - Friday, 10 am - 4 pm; Thursdays 10 am - 8 pm; Saturday and Sunday, Noon - 4 pm.
