Orchestra Spring Concert Featuring Minnesota Orchestra’s Concertmaster Erin Keefe

Minnesota Orchestra’s Concertmaster Erin Keefe joins the Macalester Orchestra, under the direction of Mark Mandarano, for their spring concert.  Keefe will perform two pieces with the orchestra: Camille Saint-Saëns’ popular Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in A minor written in 1863, and Richard Wagner’s Träume (Dreams), originally written for female voice and piano before he produced a fully orchestrated version in 1857.  The concert is 8 p.m., Friday, May 3 in Mairs Concert Hall, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center & Gallery, 1600 Grand Ave., St. Paul, Minn., and is free.  Call 651-696-6808 or email rhest@macalester.edu for more information.

Sociology student awarded a top place in national competition

Macalester senior IndiAna R. Gowland of Mill Valley, Calif., has won third place in the 2013 national Alpha Kappa Delta Undergraduate Paper Competition with her paper titled “No Boys/Girls Allowed: How Public Schools Respond to Uncertainty in Single-Gender Education.”   Alpha Kappa Delta, the honors society for sociology, sponsors the annual undergraduate paper competition that receives entries from across the country.  This award marks the third consecutive year that Macalester sociology majors have earned the top prizes from Alpha Kappa Delta.

Student awarded a Boren Scholarship

David Goldstein ’16, from Sharon, Mass., has been awarded a Boren Scholarship.  He'll be studying Arabic in Ifrane, Morocco, for nine weeks this summer on a full government scholarship.

Art Professor Receives $30,000 Fellowship

Art Professor Christine Willcox has received a $30,000 fellowship from the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation in Providence, R.I.  She is one of nine recipients who represent the fields of the History of Art and Architecture, Painting, and Sculpture. Willcox’s project is called The Still Point.

Theatre Professor Receives NEA Grant

Theatre Prof. Harry Waters Jr., in partnership with Bedllam Theatre, has received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) $10,000 grant for the development of a new performance work, AKA: Father/Sons, exploring relationships between African-American fathers and sons around sexuality and sexual identity.

Macalester Graduating Senior Awarded Second Place in 2013 Presbyterian Outlook Church-College Partnership Award

Courtney Nussbaumer ’13, a graduating senior from Brookfield, Wis. double majoring in Political Science and Hispanic Studies with a Legal Studies Concentration, has been awarded second place for the 2013 Presbyterian Outlook Church-College Partnership Award. She wrote an essay based on the topic, “How my education at my PC (USA)-related college has prepared me for significant service and leadership.”  Over 30 other students from colleges across the country entered this year, and a panel of judges assessed Nussbaumer’s to be one of the top essays.

Art Professor Godollei Wins Thomas Jefferson Award

Ruthann Godollei, Professor of Art, has been awarded the 2013 Thomas Jefferson Award. The award was established in 1961 by the Robert Earll McConnell Foundation to honor faculty members who exemplify the principles and ideals of Thomas Jefferson. Godollei was selected by a committee of past Jefferson Award winners.

Macalester Professor Awarded American Academy of Arts and Letters 2013 Literature Prize
