Macalester Names Mansco Perry III Chief Investment Officer

Mansco Perry III will become Macalester's Chief Investment Officer, effective November 1. As CIO, Perry will oversee the college’s $587 million endowment, which ranks 14th among U.S. liberal arts colleges. The endowment supports financial aid for students, and academic and co-curricular programs, among other college priorities.

Macalester Moves Forward on $33.8 Million Arts Center Expansion and Renovation

Macalester College has secured funding and board approval to move forward with the first phase of a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center.  The project will begin in January 2011.

Carleton Macy Music Retrospective Concert To Be Held
October 4, 2010

A retrospective of music composed by Professor Emeritus Carleton Macy will be performed at Macalester College on Friday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Macy will play tenor recorder at the concert. Other performers are John Jensen, pianist; Zeitgeist (Heather Barringer, Patti Cudd, Pat O’Keefe, Shannon Wettstein); Emma Lynn, soprano; and Rose Rinder, flute.

Lowe Lecture with Martha Nussbaum

Prof. Martha Nussbaum’s talk, "Creating Capabilities: The Human Development Approach," will investigate a new theoretical approach: the "capabilities" or "human development" method, discussing reasons for preferring it to standard approaches and looking at debates it has engendered about cultural pluralism and universality. The Lowe Lectureship at at Macalester College was established in honor of Arnold H. Lowe, former pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis former President of the Macalester Board of Trustees.

Professors Moe and Aanonsen Named to Endowed Chairs

The El-Kati Distinguished Lectureship in American Studies presents a talk by Stanford University’s Harry J. Elam, Jr. The lectureship, established by Macalester alumni Dr. Stanley M. Berry ’75 and Bertram M. Days ’74 along with Ava B. Days, honors Macalester Prof. Mahmoud El-Kati’s career (1970-2003) as a lecturer, writer and commentator on the African American experience.

Sylvia Forman Prize Awarded to Recent Macalester Graduate

Eau Claire, Wis., resident MaryBeth Grewe ’10, has been awarded the Sylvia Forman Prize from the Association for Feminist Anthropology, a section of the American Anthropological Association, for the best undergraduate paper in feminist anthropology.
