Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans
in Science (SACNAS)
The SACNAS National Conference provides a forum for students, faculty
and professionals in science and education to share research, address
the unique accomplishments and challenges of minorities in science,
form networks of mentors and colleagues, and gain access to educational
and career opportunities. The 2007 conference was held in Kansas City, MO from October 11-14.
The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students
(ABRCMS) is a national conference designed to encourage students
to pursue advanced training in the biomedical sciences or behavioral
sciences, including mathematics and provide faculty mentors and
advisors with resources for facilitating student success. The Annual
Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is
sponsored by The National Institute of General Medical Sciences
(NIGMS), Division of Minority Opportunities in Research Program
(MORE) and managed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
This year's meeting was held in Austin, Texas from November 7-10.
A number of DISC students have attended SACNAS or ABRCMS national
meetings in the past. These students include Alex Rivero, Said Guled, Stephanie Abascal, Earnest Simpkins, Amelia Mueller, Natasha Hilt, Alison Tray, Paul Maitland-McKinley, Dimpho Orionz, Afeke Kambui, Lyndsey Byrd, Crystal Barriga, and Chris Glass.
Student National Medical Association (SNMA)
The SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. It was established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College. SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring culturally sensitive medical education and services, as well as increasing the number of African-American, Latino and other students of color entering and completing medical school. The national meeting is in New York City, March 19-23, 2008.
