Experiential Learning

Macalester science majors also have the opportunity to complete an internship or experiential learning experience during the summer or academic year. These opportunities provide a context outside of the classroom for the student to gain knowledge about a specific discipline, explore career options, or apply classroom knowledge to real world situations. The internship office at Macalester can provide information and support for students seeking an internship. Information about internships can be found on the Biology Department website also.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Taylor Fellowship
Students interested in pursuing a career in health science can apply for a Taylor fellowship. Talk with Professor Liz Jansen in Biology for more information.

Taylor Public Health Fellowship
The Ruth and Vernon Taylor Endowment at Macalester College will offer a small number of fellowships to provide stipends for students to work in public health settings, either doing specific research projects or working on community health projects or initiatives, during the summer of 2008. Click here for more information.

Hennepin County Medical Center Emergency Room
The Research Associate (RA) Program at Hennepin County Medical Center hosts medical students and undergraduates interested in a career in medicine to participate in data collection for academic research projects.  As RAs, students are afforded the opportunity to interact with patients, observe the practice of Emergency Medicine, and learn some of the methodology of clinical research.

The Research Associate Program runs year-round with students generally working 6-8 hours a week during the academic year. The summer program is a highly intensive twelve-week program from June through August during which students are scheduled to cover the ED for 24 hours a week (3 8-hour shifts).  In addition to time spent in the ED students attend weekly lectures on selected topics in Emergency Medicine and research methodology.  This is an unpaid position.  Applications are available at www.hcmced.org or, email  Erik Rockswold at erik.rockswold@co.hennepin.mn.us

Breakthrough Collaborative
Breakthrough Collaborative is a national non-profit that increases educational opportunity for high-potential, low-income middle school students and inspires outstanding college and high school students to pursue careers in education. Consistently featured as a Top Ten Internship by the Princeton Review, Breakthrough’s innovative Students Teaching Students model partners middle-school students with college and high school students who serve as teachers, role models and mentors, providing real-life examples that it’s ‘cool to be smart’. There are two Breakthrough sites in the Twin Cities. One is located at the Blake school in Minneapolis. For more information go to www.blakeschool.org/learningwork. The other site is at Mounds Park Academy in Maplewood. For more information go to www.moundsparkacademy.org/extended/breakthrough.html.

HECUA

The Partners in Internship Program (PIP) sponsored by HECUA provides internship grants to nonprofit organizations in MN, ND and WI.  Each recipient organization hires an undergraduate student who manages a project designed by the agency.  There are several opportunities related to community health.  For more information go to www.hecua.org/pip.php.
