Pre-Orientation Programs
As you begin your Macalester career, it is important to remember that some of the most important educational opportunities take place outside the classroom. The descriptions below and their related links detail information about pre-orientation co-curricular opportunities for first-year students.
Lives of Commitment: A program that engages 30 first-year students in community service and intentional reflection on issues of social justice, ethical and religious commitments, and the integration of values with work. Throughout the year, each student will spend 3 hours each week as part of a small group at one of six nonprofit organizations that engage immigrant and refugee or childhood education issues. One distinguishing aspect of this program is the time spent in discussion with other participants about one's own commitments. Note: The program begins with a required pre-orientation urban retreat for students (August 18-21). Students chosen for Lives of Commitment cannot participate in pre-orientation MacWard Bound trips. For more information, and to complete an application, visit http://www.macalester.edu/lilly/loc.html. Applications should be received no later than Wednesday, June 18, 2008.
MacWard Bound Outdoor Adventure Program: The mission of MacWard Bound is to provide group experiences in which new students will experience supportive community, open communication, relationship building and teamwork in an experiential outdoor environment. MacWard Bound offers professionally guided Outward Bound and Wilderness Inquiry trips that will occur August 16-August 20, 2008. An upperclass Macalester student will accompany the groups to provide mentorship and share their Macalester perspectives with first year students. The trips include exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Superior National Hiking Trail. For more information, visit http://www.macalester.edu/campusprograms/MacWardBound.html, or you may fill out an application here.
Bonner Community Scholar Program: From business, to government, and non-profit management the world needs courageous leadership inspired by service. With this in mind, this Fall 2008, Macalester will accept 15 first-year students into the Bonner Community Scholar Program. The Bonner Program is an opportunity for students to use their energy, talents and leadership skills to engage in significant community service. Participants receive training, financial support and discussion opportunities with a group of other engaged students. Bonner students nationwide are changing lives, transforming communities and making an impact. The Macalester Civic Engagement Center invites you to apply! For the application and more information go to http://www.macalester.edu/cec/programs/bonner.html.
We encourage you to take advantage of these great programs and submit your applications by June 18, 2008. Have a great summer, and we look forward to seeing you in August!
