Sexual Assault Prevention

Dear Incoming Student,

At Macalester College we are encourage our entire community to take responsibility for, become aware of, and work to prevent sexual assault. We want all of our students to enjoy a healthy and enlightening experience during their time at Mac. To help foster that environment we have provided the Sexual Assault Prevention online education module. All incoming students are required to complete this module by August 15.

Nationwide, the statistics on sexual assault on college campuses are disturbing. 1 out of every 4 women attending college in this country will experience some kind of attempted or completed sexual assault. Many young men find themselves under legal scrutiny because they did not understand the particulars of consent.

Most of the sexual assault problem is not attributable to colleges directly, but rather to those forces in our culture that make sexual assault likely. Those forces include the following facts:

  • Men and women possess different communication styles and therefore hold differing perceptions of consent;
  • The media typically misrepresents rape as something that happens by strangers with weapons, when the truth is that 9 out of 10 rapes on college campuses are by someone the victim already knows;
  • Our language holds imbedded differences in its terminology for male and female sexuality, and
  • Both men and women experience peer pressure with respect to sexual activity.

Therefore, we are requiring that all new students view the Student Success™ Sexual Assault Prevention online education program. While some academic institutions try to keep the nationwide sexual assault problem hidden, we believe that an informed student body is in all of our best interests.  While we may never fully eliminate sexual assault, we are committed to making our campus one of the safest in the nation.
