AP/IB Policy

Students who have completed advanced work in physics before coming to Macalester can use that experience to get college credit and to place out of our introductory classes.

Here are the rules which the registrar currently has regarding advanced work:

Exam Score Credit
AP Physics C: Mechanics 5 PHYS 226
AP Physics C: E & M 5 PHYS 227
AP Physics B any not automatic
Physics IB (H) (College Physics) 5,6,7 8 credits of PHYS 194
A-levels (advanced exam) (College Physics)   8 credits of PHYS 194

The department may recognize advanced work for placement purposes even if no college credit is awarded.  In practice, this amounts to waiving prerequisites for advanced courses. Placement decisions are made on an individual basis by the faculty member teaching the advanced course, in consultation with the chair.

Currently our major requirements consist of 33 physics credits, including successful completion of a list of required courses, an advanced lab experience, and capstone.  Our recent practice has been that advanced work which receives Macalester college credit may count toward that total.  Courses which students place out of do not.
