| John
Cannon |
Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Ph.D. University of Minnesota, 2004
John
Cannon, assistant professor, is an observational astronomer with a
focus on nearby, low-mass galaxies. Using data from a variety
of
ground and space-based observatories, he works with students to
understand the nature and evolution of these systems in the local
universe.

| James
R. Doyle |
Professor
of Physics
Ph. D., University of Colorado, 1989
Jim Doyle is an experimentalist in plasma and materials physics with an
emphasis on materials used in thin film solar cells. Students
are
regular participants in his NSF-funded studies of reactive sputtering,
computer modeling of plasma systems, and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor
deposition.

| James
Heyman |
Professor of Physics and Chair
Ph.D., University of California at Berkeley, 1992
James Heyman is interested in experimental
condensed matter physics and
ultrafast laser spectroscopy. Students regularly collaborate with him
in his NSF-funded research on ultrafast processes in semiconductors and
the generation of picosecond pulses of electromagnetic radiation..

| Sung
Kyu Kim |
Professor of Physics
Ph. D, Duke University, 1965
Sung Kyu Kim is Professor of Physics at Macalester. He
is
the author of Physics: The Fabric of Reality (Macmillan, 1975) and
co-author
of Modern Physics for Scientists and Engineers (Macmillan,
1978).
He is a contributor to Macmillan Encyclopedia of Physics (Simon and
Schuster Macmillan, 1996). His work on a book manuscript on
introductory cosmology in collaboration with the late Professor David
N. Schramm of the University
of Chicago is currently being revised by Professors Krauss and Starkman
of Case Western Reserve University under a contract with
Prentice
Hall. His current teaching assignment
includes
"Contemporary Concepts of Physics", which enrolls about 200 students
per year, and a lecture series, "Cosmos: Perspectives and
Reflections". He also runs the Macalester Summer Physics
Institute for pre-medical students, which typically draws about 60
students from some 20 colleges and universities. He received
the
1993 Burlington Northern Excellence in Teaching award.

| Tonnis
ter Veldhuis |
Assistant Professor
Ph. D., Purdue University (1993)
Dr.
Tonnis ter Veldhuis is a theoretical elementary particle physicist.
His interests include the physics of the Higgs boson, the
elusive
particle currently being hunted for at the world's most powerful
particle accelerators, and the physics of dark matter, the stuff recent
observations indicate to be the dominant component of particles in our
universe. Professor ter Veldhuis also studies supersymmetric
extensions of the Standard Model, and he investigates scenarios in
which our Universe is embedded in a higher dimensional space-time .

Manager
M.S., Astrophysics, Iowa State University (1991)
Brian Adams is the department's Laboratory Supervisor and
Observatory Manager. He teaches the introductory level
physics
lab courses and provides lecture demonstration and general support for
the department. He joined the Physics and Astronomy department in 1998.

| Barbara
Ekeberg |
Administrative Assistant
Barb joined the Chemistry Department in
September, 1988 as Administrative Assistant. In 1997, her role expanded
to become the Department Coordinator for both the Physics and Geology
Departments. In her position she provides secretarial support
to
the faculty and manages the Chemistry Department budget. She enjoys
getting to know the students each year. For relaxation she likes
tennis, gardening, traveling and watching professional basketball.
