Macalester senior Trudy Rebert of Hanover, Pennsylvania won a $30,000 scholarship for graduate study from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Having worked with a variety of NGOs in the U.S., Tanzania, and India, Trudy hopes to link disparate communities and to help set the agenda for social change by working for development both in the U.S. and abroad. After Macalester, Trudy hopes to earn an MA in Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies or Sussex University.

The Truman Foundation finds, recognizes, and financially supports undergraduates with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in the public service. Truman Scholars apply and are named during their junior year. To learn more about the Truman Foundation and applying for the Truman Scholarship, go here.

In 2005, senior Ben Garnett of Laramie, Wyoming interned in the Washington, DC Office of Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo. As an intern, Garnett gained insight into the daily workings of a Senate press office. Some of his responsibilities included writing press releases, compiling news stories, and attending committee hearings. Garnett plans to use his experience in the nation's capitol as a starting point for a career in either business or public policy.
