INTERNSHIPS |
|||||
Students who major in Political Science must fulfill a "practicum" requirement. This requirement can be met in a number of ways, but students typically do so by interning with a political campaign, with a local legislator at the state capitol, or work with a non-government organization in the Twin Cities. Occasionally, students intern in Washington, D.C. or at a foreign location. |

In fall 2007, Adelaide Pagano ('09 Niskayuna, NY) interned with TakeAction Minnesota, a progressive non-profit located in St. Paul, where she learned many aspects of political organizing. For example, she worked on several progressive candidates' races for St. Paul city council and also worked on an issue campaign to establish universal health care in Minnesota. Her internship included phone-banking, door-knocking, doing research and strategic planning. Currently, she is helping to plan a town hall forum on health care in Minnetonka and a "health care day of action" in Minneapolis. |

Emily Seddon ('08 Montpelier, VT) is interning at the International Institute of Minnesota in in their refugee resettlement and casework office. Her official title is Volunteer Coordinator for the Matching Grant Program, but this is only a small part of what she does. She works directly with refugees who come into the casework office because the program "matches" part of the federal grant the Institute receives. Emily is also responsible for tracking and reporting to the federal agency in-kind matches such as volunteer efforts, help refugees receive from friends, and other non-monetary support. By working in the casework office, Emily has built upon the courses in humanitarianism that she has taken at Macalester and learned a lot about refugee law, human services, and non-profits in a "real time" setting. |

Mirja Benkovic (Stockholm, Sweden) is spending her fall semester at the Embassy of Sweden in Manila. Interning at a small embassy on the other side of the globe has given her an opportunity to work with a wide variety of tasks. Her main responsibility has been editing and writing articles for a newsletter on the Asian Development Bank. Consequently, she has spent a lot of time interviewing ADB officials, as well as going to seminars and meetings at the ADB. As an intern, Mirja has represented the Embassy at meetings, seminars, receptions and field visits. Mirja has also worked on consular and commercial tasks, such as helping Swedish nationals in the Phillipines and aiding Swedish companies interested in business opportunities in the country.
