Emily Hedin '07 has been awarded a grant from the U.S. State Department-sponsored Fulbright Program for a year of research in Africa, on a project titled "The Effects of Microfinance on Gender Equality and Democracy in Senegal." Hedin will begin her work in Senegal in September after spending the summer implementing a human rights education and advocacy project in Peru with the support of an Upper Midwest Human Rights Fellowship. |

Fiorella Ormeño Incio '09 has received a $10,000 grant from 100 Projects for Peace, an initiative open to all students at Davis United World College Program schools. Fiorella's project will entail organization of a series of Peace Building Workshops in twenty-five high schools throughout Peru this summer. >> READ MORE Fiorella also received a grant from the Macalester College Civic Engagement Center's Action Fund for her documentary film project on the democratic process in Venezuela. Titled "A Journey through Democracy: From the Twin Cities to Caracas," the project incorporates footage from the Venezuela Solidarity Conference that took place at Macalester in November and numerous interviews Fiorella conducted when she traveled to Venezuela during January term. |

Trudy Rebert '07 of Hanover, Pennsylvania won a $30,000 scholarship for graduate study from the Harry S Truman Scholarship Foundation. Having worked with a variety of NGOs in the U.S., Tanzania, and India, Trudy hopes to link disparate communities and to help set the agenda for social change by working for development both in the U.S. and abroad. After Macalester, Trudy hopes to earn an MA in Development Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies or Sussex University. The Truman Foundation finds, recognizes, and financially supports undergraduates with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in the public service.
