Macalester President Chosen to be Part of New Chronicle of Higher Education/New York Times Higher Education Cabinet

St. Paul, Minn. – July 8, 2008 Macalester President Brian C. Rosenberg is one of 57 presidents of four-year colleges/universities and higher education associations invited to join the inaugural Chronicle of Higher Education/New York Times Higher Education Cabinet. 

The purpose of the cabinet is to create a community of forward thinking presidents and chancellors who can identify the key issues and trends in higher education.  The first meeting will be held on September 15, 2008, at The New York Times headquarters in New York.

In addition to Rosenberg, other presidents include: Robert Bruininks, University of Minnesota; Lawrence S. Bacow, Tufts University; Colin S. Diver, Reed College; Amy Gutmann, University of Pennsylvania; Rev. John I. Jenkins, University of Notre Dame; Steven Knapp, George Washington University; David Oxtoby, Pomona College; Beverly Daniel Tatum, Spelman College; Mark S. Wrighton, Washington University in St. Louis; Mark G. Yudof, University of California System; and Catherine B. Hill, Vassar College.

The Association of American Universities, American Council on Education, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities are also represented.

Rosenberg is a member of the Leadership Circle of the Presidents Climate Commitment and has led the college in a number of sustainability initiatives, including seeking LEED platinum certification for the new home for the Institute for Global Citizenship.  He has been president of Macalester since 2003.
 
Rosenberg is also chair of the Presidents’ Council of Project Pericles, an organization founded by Eugene Lang and devoted to education for democratic citizenship, and finishing a term as chair of the Commission on International Initiatives of the American Council on Education.  He is the former chair of the board of the Minnesota Private College Council.

Subsequent meetings of the Higher Education Cabinet will be virtual and will feature different topics each time.  Reporters from each newspaper will attend the meetings and will vary according to the subject matter.
