Non-Tenure Track Faculty Positions available Fall Term, 2010

International Studies

  • Hubert H. Humphrey Visiting Chair, International Studies
for one-semester position beginning September 2010 or January 2011

The International Studies Department at Macalester College seeks to hire a distinguished scholar, writer, artist, or professional, in any discipline or field, broadly engaged in issues of a global or international nature, to hold the Hubert H. Humphrey visiting professorship.  The appointment will be for either the fall or spring semester of 2010-2011.  The salary for this position will be highly competitive.  Compensation will also include, at the chair-holder’s option, occupancy of a comfortable home near campus and use of a college office for the entire academic year, thus making it an attractive retreat or base of operations.

The International Studies Department at Macalester is the oldest (since 1949), broadest, and deepest such unit at any U.S. liberal-arts college.  Our faculty is interdisciplinary and covers a broad range of humanities and social sciences.  Our students hail from and travel to all continents and have interests including but not limited to development studies, human rights, the environment, global media, cultural flows, and the many arts.  Thus we are less concerned with the specific field or profession of chair candidates than we are with the richness and breadth of their intellectual and creative commitments.

We ask candidates, at the initial phase of application, to send us a detailed cover letter and a CV.  The cover letter should describe the candidate’s past and present transnational experiences, and sketch out two or more courses (or a range of subjects) the candidate would be pleased to teach.  The teaching load for this position is two courses in one semester, or, at the chair-holder’s option, one course each semester for the full year.  The students will be talented undergraduates who may be introductory or advanced.

Please send your cover letter and CV to:
    Prof. David Chioni Moore, Chair
    International Studies Department, Macalester College
1600 Grand Ave., Saint Paul, MN 55105, U.S.A.

Equally and more conveniently for many, you may submit your application electronically by locating the listing of this position at www.academicjobsonline.org and following the instructions there.  Questions of any kind may be emailed to us at intl@macalester.edu. We also invite you to visit our departmental website at www.macalester.edu/internationalstudies for further perspective.  Applications received by November 15th, 2009 will be given primary consideration, but the search will continue until the position has been filled.

Macalester College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college in the vibrant Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, which has a population of approximately three million and is home to numerous colleges and universities including the University of Minnesota. Macalester’s diverse student body comprises over 1800 undergraduates from 48 states and over 75 countries. The College maintains a long-standing commitment to academic excellence with a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. We are especially interested in applicants dedicated to both teaching and research/creative activity within a liberal arts college community. As an Equal Opportunity employer supportive of affirmative efforts to achieve diversity, Macalester strongly encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented minority groups.
