Tenure Track Faculty Positions 2008-2009

Political Science and Economics
G. Theodore Mitau Chair

The Departments of Economics and Political Science at Macalester College seek to appoint a distinguished senior scholar-teacher to the G. Theodore Mitau Chair in Public Policy/Public Affairs, beginning in Fall 2008. A refugee from Nazi Germany in the 1930s, Theodore Mitau studied at Macalester and later joined its faculty as a professor of Political Science. His tenure at the College was marked by legendary teaching and an active public life reflective of his deep commitment to democratic institutions.

The position will be jointly appointed in Economics and Political Science and will be at the rank of associate professor or professor. Ph.D in Public Policy or Public Affairs preferred, although applications from those holding doctorates in Economics and Political Science will be given full consideration.  Broad empirical, theoretical and methodological training are essential.  The successful candidate will have a background in energy, public health, poverty or the environment (all on either the national or global scales). He or she will be expected to pursue a rich research program, support the Economics and Political Science departments by offering a number of courses related to the theory and practice of public policy/public affairs, and participate (as appropriate) in interdisciplinary programs such as Environmental Studies, International Studies and Urban Studies.  Macalester College’s urban location provides numerous opportunities for professional collaborations at the University of Minnesota and the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute for Public Affairs; as well as with national, state and local government offices, public agencies and community organizations.

Compensation, research support and conditions of employment are flexible and highly competitive.  Send letter of inquiry or full application, including cover letter, c.v., and names of three references to: Mitau Chair Search,  Professor Adrienne Christiansen, Chair, Department of Political Science, Macalester College, 1600 Grand Avenue, St. Paul, MN. 55105.  Applications received by 1 October 2007 will receive first consideration.
