Discussion regarding participation in the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE)
Come and advise Macalester on its future participation in the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE, www.nitle.org). NITLE provides "opportunities for teachers in liberal arts contexts to create transformative learning experiences for and with their students by deploying emerging technologies in innovative, effective, and sustainable ways." NITLE is significantly changing its membership and pricing structure for the upcoming academic year and Macalester needs your help to decide how we will participate.

The Things I Think About: A CST Director's Notebook
For most of my professional life, but especially in the last six years as CST Director, I have wondered about some things. What is good teaching really? How do you really know if you are a good teacher? Are the best teachers also good scholars? Does faculty scholarship really translate into better teaching? If so, how? And if not, why do we do scholarship, and at whose expense? How does our reward system (tenure, rank & position, money, peer approval) shape the quality of our students' education? Do we really reward behaviors and achievements that enhance our students' education? Can we and should we do this better? Would it take courage to do such a thing? How much?
After 25 years of wondering, my answer to most of these queestions is "I don't know." Impressive, right? But not knowing will not keep me from talking! I'll have some reflections, some of which will challenge prevailing institutional assumptions and practices. Come to listen, share your views, eat lunch and enjoy yourself in the company of others.

Department Chairs Meeting
Steve Anderson, Faegre & Benson
Department Chairs and the Policy Prohibiting Harassment
The College's policy prohibiting harassment can be an important defense against claims of unlawful discrimination. However, for that defense to be available, the College must be able to show that it took timely and appropriate action in response to a complaint of harassment. This seminar will focus on the key role that department chairs play in applying College policy and in responding to direct and indirect complaints of harassment, and will provide suggestions regarding how to respond to various situations.

Provost Diane Michelfelder and Task Force on Faculty Community and Career Flexibility Members
Supporting the Hyphen in "Work-Life Balance": Piloting the ACE/Sloan Faculty Career Flexibility Project
Supporting faculty involves not only providing professional development opportunities that allow faculty to establish and nourish their careers as teacher-scholars, but also policies that help faculty achieve balance and integration between their personal and professional lives.
Last year, Macalester was invited to participate as part of a pilot group in the ACE/Sloan Faculty Career Flexibility Project, an initiative designed to inspire thinking about "best practices" in helping faculty address issues related to work-life balance. Starting with an analysis of the Macalester faculty survey data collected as part of this project and of comparative data from other colleges, the Task Force on Career Flexibility has been reviewing current policies at the college and drafting recommendations for change. Come hear from the Provost and other task force members what they've learned, what we're currently doing well and what we might do to provide even better support in this area as faculty demographics continue to evolve.
The Department Chair Leadership Development Program is supported by funding from the Office of the Provost at Macalester College.
