ATTENTION-DEFICIT DISORDER


What is it?

Attention-deficit disorder is first seen in children before the age of seven. The child is fidgety, has difficulty remaining seated, impulsive, easily distracted, and has difficulty sustaining attention.

Tests using the MAO-A inhibitor moclobemide. Moclobemide is a reversible and selective MAO-A inhibiting drug with few side effects. A greater change was seen in subjects taking moclobemide than those taking the placebo: (Moclobemide vs. placebo ) Clinical Global Impression 50% vs. 38% improvement, parents opinion 66% vs. 46%, DSM III-R 75% vs 61%. As you can see the MAO-A inhibitor moclobemide seems to improve condition of ADD. This implies that MAO levels in those with ADD is higher than normal and treatment to lower MAO activity will help to alleviate the symptoms.
