A depressive disorder is one characterized by a loss of affect, difficulty concenrating, sleep disturbance, and general feelings of sadness and hopelessness. Studies have shown that reversible and selective inhibitors of MAO-A, such as moclobemide, are just as effective at treating depressed patients as recognized potent antidepressant drugs.

In fact, the rates of improvement were virtually identical for moclobemide versus other drugs in the categories of endogenous unipolar depression, non-psychotic depression and retarded depression. Happily, moclobemide shows a low incidence of side effects. This makes it a better treatment than some of the traditional antidepressant medications.
