Historical Highlights of ADD/ADHD

-The first clinical description of ADD/ADHD was reported in the British journal, Lancet, by Dr. George Still in 1902 (though not with that name, of course).

-ADD/ADHD was known as hyperkinetic impulse disorder for more than 40 years (as it is still frequently known outside of the U.S.)

-In the 1940s it was observed that dl-amphetamine, an earlier form of amphetamine, reduced the disruptive symptoms of hyperkinetic children

-Stella Chess described “Hyperactive Child Syndrome” in 1960 a being characterized by overactivity

-In 1980, the 2nd Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual first recognized "Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood" disorder

-Between1990 and 1993, ADHD-related visits to primary practitioners increased from 1.6 to 4.2 million per year.

-More than 10 million prescriptions were written for methylphenidate in 1996.
