What is ADD/ADHD?

 



-Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder (which means ADD/ADHD is a disorder that shows up during childhood, sometimes as early as age 2 or 3)

 

-It effects mental processes, specifically attention and impulse control and its most obvious symptoms include an inability to sit still or focus on a task

 

-The name of the disorder was officially changed to Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in 1994 but many people still refer to it as Attention Defifict Disorder (ADD), which it was named in 1980. In this website, we will use ADD/ADHD (ADD or ADHD).

 

-It is still known as hyperkinetic disorder, outside of the United States.

- ADD/ADHD is characterized by impulsive behaviors, hyperactivity, distractibility, and the inability to focus on a task for a prolonged period.

 

-People with ADD/ADHD have normal intelligence, but they become easily distracted or bored.

 

-According to most estimates 3-9% of children have ADD/ADHD

 

-There are three subtypes of ADD/ADHD based on the different symptoms that people with ADD/ADHD can have

 

-A distinction is also usually made between Childhood ADD/ADHD and Adult ADD/ADHD

 

-Their difficulties in concentration and impulse control in no way indicate below average intelligence. In fact, many people with ADD/ADHD possess above average intelligence
