Gender
It is interesting to note that AD is more prevalent among women. This was previously explained that this was due to the fact that women typically live longer and, therefore, will reach the age at which one is likely to be affected. There is also the possibility that women and men respond to the same risk factor differently. It was found that women are innately more susceptible than men for AD and the risk is expected to be higher in women of all ages. This could also be explained that men and women differ in exposure to such environmental risk factors such as head trauma and smoking. There is evidence to suggest that the apoE4/3 genotype is more prevalent in women and the apoE3/3 genotype was under-represented in a certain population of AD patients.
