Tricyclics: An Introduction

Tricyclic antidepressants are grouped together because their chemical structure contains a set of three rings.

In addition to being used to treat major depression, tricyclics are also employed in the treatment of atypical and delusional depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, enuresis (uncontrollable urination in children), panic disorder, and certain other disorders.

While tricyclic antidepressants are in general more effective than SSRIs and MAOIs, they also have a large number of side effects and a potential toxicity that the other drugs do not match. That is why they are seen today as a risky solution to depression.
