Living with Narcolepsy

Efforts can be made to effectively manage the symptoms of narcolepsy (which can be frustrating, at best) so that those afflicted with the disorder can take part in everyday activities with fewer difficulties. Here are some general guidelines that can assist in coping with narcolepsy:

sleepy

—Discuss any changes in your symptoms and possible side effects of medications with your doctor.

—Develop your own ways to cope with the symptoms and cataplexy triggers by looking for safe situations, places and supportive persons. These can all prove helpful to avoiding injury from falls.

—Help yourself by joining support groups, supporting research, and/or lobbying for legislation.

—Seek out counseling, as a mental health professional familiar with disabilities can be helpful if you need to discuss personal, family and employment matters.
