Treatment for nightmares can be a very complex procedure, especially since the causes of nightmares are still a mystery. In fact, there is no single universal treatment for nightmare sufferers. The most effective therapy at the present time is probably cognitive behavioral therapy; by changing the mentality and attitude of sufferers towards the nightmare experience and restructuring the influence and the meaning of the dream, patients are given the tools to achieve mastery over their nightmares. It has been theorized that this cognitive restructuring may actually change the neural circuits responsible for the nightmares, ultimately reducing or increasing the release of neurotrasmitters that are believed to be involved in the nightmare process, without the aid of any medication.
