Murder Down Town
Serial killings have been linked to urbanism. Murder rates are higher in densely populated cities such as Indiana, Detroit ,Miami, New York City and Washington. These murders are often associated with social disorder, alienation, drugs, fear, dissociation, poverty and broken homes. The probability of serial murder occurrences increases as the population density increases. Psychologist reason this is due to the impersonalization and frequent encounter with strangers that go hand in hand with largely populated cities. High density populations are attractive to those who wish to melt into their environment.Several of the more effective murders have operated in some of the more populated areas of the country. It's not clear, however, whether serial killers are attracted such locales or if they already live in the area. Killers such as Ted Bundy and Christopher Wilder had no difficulty in looking for women and children in shopping malls. There have been some deviations from the perspective of urbansim. Killers such as Jeffrey Gahmer preferred to seek the victim who walked, worked or played alone so further research is underway to warrant the connection between population density and the occurrence of serial murders.
