Eye Movements while thinking.

Some people believe our eyes can betray what we are thinking.  This theory says that we perceive though our eyes so much that the eyes sometime look at the part of the brain that is working.  For example, when people are thinking of a visual lie they often look up and to the left (the part of the brain that is coming up with the lie).  However, there has been much debate about how good this behavior is at detecting lies and more research needs to be done to know if this phenomenon is wishful thinking or has some promise (Dillingham, 1998).

“When a constructing a visual image, the [theory] predicts that the eyes will move from the center of their orbits to the up and right position; when remembering a visual image, the eyes will move to the up and left; when recalling an auditory thought, the eyes move to the left position; when engaging in internal auditory thought, the eyes move to the left and down; when feeling kinesthetic thoughts, the eyes move to the right and down position, and when constructing an auditory thought, the eyes move to the right.”(Dillingham, 1998)
