Neurology

So...the other day in lab we all pretended like we were doctors and attempted to diagnosis our "patients" who were other students in the class. Their disorders ranged from loss of memory, loss of motor or sensory ablilities, inappropriate behaviors, loss of speech, schizophrenia, along with many combinations of others.

It was an interesting experience, but it kind of made me nervous to be a doctor. It wasn't uncommon that we would misdiagnosis someone, thinking they had a problem with their cranial nerves when really the problem was in the motor cortex. We often tended to overlook the simplest explanation.

One of our patients kept claiming that she was "the Obix" while also secretively telling us that Peter smells. She kept turning her head to the side and whispering to the air. It was evident that this woman had schizophrenia and that was all there was to it.

I think this experience was a really good way to learn the behavioral aspects of neuroscience. Not only was it fun, but it makes it easier to remember when you are actively participating, both as a patient and a doctor. Good job Eric.
