The
belief in the era of 500 B.C. to 500 A.D. was there were
four humors: yellow bile, black bile, blood and phlegm. It was believed that an
imbalance among the four humors causes disease. These ideas emphasized
the
importance of
diet in the
etiology and
treatment of disease, and argue against
the popular claim of the day that diseases are all caused by excessive
heat,
cold,
wetness, or dryness.
