General info

Clozapine was the first antipsychotic drug to be considered“atypical".  It was synthesized in 1960 and its first clinical trial was completed in 1962.  U.S. marketing began in February 1990, whereas  in Europe it was made available for clinical use in 1975. It is part of the dibenzodiazepine class of antipsychotics. In the US , clozapine is only approved for the treatment of patients with that have not responded to previous treatment with typical drugs (e.i. treatment-refractory patients) . Patients treated with clozapine have been able  to sustain more independent lives than other treatment-refractory patients whose condition has not been improved by other treatments (Perry 2001).
