Emily Cohen '09
Macalester Jewish Organization
Richmond, VA/ West Orange, NJ

Emily was raised by a Jewish father and Quaker mother who hadn't chosen which religion they wanted to raise their children when Emily came along. Although they decided upon Judaism when she was a pre-schooler, and Emily feels immense ties to that faith, she has acquired some of her moral compass from the Quaker beliefs. Emily is very interested in learning about and comparing different faiths, and she really wants to challenge Macalester's reputation as a school that completely ignores God. Through her work on the council, she hopes to bring a greater knowledge of different faiths to the Macalester community and help both religious and non-religious students feel comfortable on campus.

Jessie Light '08
Unitarian Universalists
Ripon, Wisconsin
Religious Studies/ German Studies

Jessie is a Unitarian Universalist from a mixed Christian/Jewish background. She enjoys exploring and earning about different faiths and incorporating what she likes into her own spiritual development, as well as helping others to develop their own faith and spirituality in whatever way is best for them. She hopes the Multifaith Council can help with personal spiritual development and/or furthering knowledge of religion, faith and spirituality, as well as helping to portray religion as a non-threatening aspect of campus life. This semester she will co-lead Mac UU's as well as start her second year with the African Music Ensemble.

Katyana Melic '08
At Large
Haifa, Israel / Singapore
Anthropology major, African Studies concentration, educational studies and political science minor.

I was raised a member of the Baha'i Faith, but it was at 15 that I finally found solace in spirituality and in particular the beauty of the Baha'i Faith. I lived in Haifa, Israel, which is the Baha'i holy land and it also there that I first began to see the importance of interfaith work. I look forward to crossing new boundaries and barriers with individuals from different backgrounds, though I would have liked to see more representation from the non Judaeo-Chrisitan faiths.

Hillary Mohaupt '08
Macalester Protestants
Rockford, IL
History major; French and Francophone Studies and American Studies minor

Hillary finds her deepest wonder while engaging in multifaith work and interreligious dialogue. While she was raised in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), she has spent time within the Catholic and Jewish traditions. She looks forward to continued dialogue and social justice work based on the universal principles that unite people across lines that might divide.
