What is room draw?
You may choose your living space for the 2010-2011 academic year through a lottery.  The lottery is based on your class year and your number of semesters on campus.

Rising juniors and seniors are combined into one room draw group.  In order for rising Juniors and Seniors to participate, they must request a draw number.

Rising sophomores will be in a separate lottery group, and will be issued draw numbers automatically.

How does the draw work?
Draw numbers are randomly assigned via computer.  Your personal draw number will be sent to you through the SPO.  You must bring your draw number to room draw in order to pick a room.  If you lose your lottery number, you may request a duplicate copy in the Residential Life office.

Note: You may not exchange your original number for a new number. Draw numbers are non-transferable.  Anyone caught attempting to circumvent room procedures will be disqualified from the draw, and will only be able to choose a room after every other student has chosen.

Can rising sophomores live with rising juniors and seniors next year?

Rising juniors and seniors may request a rising sophomore roommate(s) in GDD suites that require.  The group must consist of a greater number of rising juniors and seniors than sophomores.  Triple suites may consist of two upperclassmen and one sophomore.  Four and five-person suites may consist of one or two sophomores
Rising sophomores may live in the doubles and triples in Kirk with rising juniors and seniors.  Doubles may consist of one rising sophomore and one rising junior or senior.  Triples must have at least two rising juniors or seniors.  To insure enough housing for upperclassmen, junior senior groups may be allowed to choose a space before groups with sophomores.

Rising juniors and seniors may not homestead a space with rising sophomores.  The group must attend roomdraw

What about the students who are away on spring study abroad programs?
Students on study abroad spring 2010 may have a proxy pick a room for them. A current student may go to the room draw session and pick a room for the student who is away. Students on study abroad must complete a room draw proxy form and agree to sign a room and board contract for 2010-2011. Away students may request a room draw proxy and draw number via email to Residential Life.

What about Resident students unable to attend the draw?  If you cannot attend room draw you may designate a proxy to pick a room for you. Complete a proxy form at the Residential Life office. Your proxy must bring your signed draw number card and room and board contract to the draw along with the proxy’s student ID.

Is there a fee for going throgh the draw?
No there is no fee for going through the draw process. If you sign a contract, a $100.00 cancelation fee will apply.

What to bring to the draw:

Room changes after the draw:

A room change freeze begins after the draw and continues through the first two weeks of fall semester. As per section 9 of the Macalester Room and Board Contract, the college retains the right to consolidate housing space through an assignment or reassignment process.  Any vacancies that remain after the draw, including those in partially occupied doubles, triples, quads, suites, houses or apartments will be used to house readmitted and new transfer students during the summer months. We will notify students of new roommate assignments as they occur.
