ROOM DRAW INFORMATION FOR 2010-2011
What is room draw?
You may choose your living space for the 2010-2011 academic year through a lottery. The lottery is based on your class year and your number of semesters on campus.
Rising juniors and seniors are combined into one room draw group. In order for rising Juniors and Seniors to participate, they must request a draw number.
Rising sophomores will be in a separate lottery group, and will be issued draw numbers automatically.
How does the draw work?
Draw numbers are randomly assigned via computer. Your personal draw number will be sent to you through the SPO. You must bring your draw number to room draw in order to pick a room. If you lose your lottery number, you may request a duplicate copy in the Residential Life office.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before the draw begins. All group members may come together or one representative may bring signed room draw number cards and contracts for the group. We will use the lowest draw number of the group.
- Students must be present at the time the Room Draw session is scheduled to begin. Once students are lined up, a Residential Life staff member announces that the session has begun. If you come after the session has started, regardless of when, you will be directed to the end of the line.
- You must have a signed room and board contract and signed room draw number card for each member of the group. Only one representative from the group is required to attend the draw.
Note: You may not exchange your original number for a new number. Draw numbers are non-transferable. Anyone caught attempting to circumvent room procedures will be disqualified from the draw, and will only be able to choose a room after every other student has chosen.
Who can participate in room draw?
- All current first year students who plan to attend Macalester in the Fall 2010.
- Current sophomore and junior students who request a draw number.

Can rising sophomores live with rising juniors and seniors next year?
Rising juniors and seniors may request a rising sophomore roommate(s) in GDD suites that require. The group must consist of a greater number of rising juniors and seniors than sophomores. Triple suites may consist of two upperclassmen and one sophomore. Four and five-person suites may consist of one or two sophomores.
Rising sophomores may live in the doubles and triples in Kirk with rising juniors and seniors. Doubles may consist of one rising sophomore and one rising junior or senior. Triples must have at least two rising juniors or seniors. To insure enough housing for upperclassmen, junior senior groups may be allowed to choose a space before groups with sophomores.
What about the students who are away on spring study abroad programs?

Students on study abroad must complete a room draw proxy form and agree to sign a room and board contract for 2010-2011. Away students may request a room draw proxy and draw number via email to Residential Life.
