When will my student receive their residence hall assignment?
Residence hall assignments are mailed at the beginning of August. Students will receive their roommate(s) name and home address. We encourage roommates to contact each other, if possible, prior to arriving on campus. This helps to organize who is bringing what to campus and to aid in the transition of living with one another.
Why didn't my student receive their roommate's telephone number?
Students have the option to request that their phone number be unlisted on campus. So, to avoid any violation of privacy, we decided not to include phone numbers in your student's housing information. We suggest that your student first write a letter to their roommate and give them your student's phone number, (remember snail mail?). Your student can also try directory assistance either over the phone or on the internet using your roommate's last name and address. If your student is, or their roommate is an international student, we are willing to provide e-mail addresses if you are worried that a letter won't reach them in time.
How are first-year students assigned?
Incoming first-year students are paired based on the following criteria: (1) whether or not they have chosen a residential first-year course and (2) according to their room and board application listing their living preferences.
Residential Life makes every attempt to assign students based on their preferences. Residential Life cannot accommodate all requests but does try very hard to match students according to their needs.
What does smoke-free housing mean?
This area prohibits smoking including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc. On smoke free floors, students are expected to refrain from smoking in their rooms. Smoking is not permitted in any common area or hallway in any building on campus. Dupre 2 and 3, 30 Mac, George Draper Dayton (GDD), Grand Cambridge Apartments (GCA), Campus Houses and Cottages are smoke-free buildings. A few smoking permitted rooms are designated in the remaining halls based on request only.
Are there substance-free floors?
Because many students have requested a living environment free of the disruptions that alcohol and drug use sometimes cause, we provide substance-free areas. Students who choose a substance-free area commit to the wellness of their community by signing an agreement not to use alcohol or other drugs while living on campus. 30 Macalester and Wallace 1 are substance-free residential areas. Substance-free areas are designated in first-year halls based on housing card requests.
What are 24-Hour Quiet Floors?
Students who select a 24-Hour Quiet community have made a commitment to extend their regular quiet hours in their communities. All residents of a quiet community will share the responsibility of maintaining it as a study space 24-hours every day meaning quiet hours are always in effect. All residence halls have courtesy hours in addition to the normal quiet hours. Normal quiet hours begin at 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 1 a.m. on Friday & Saturday. 24-Hour Quiet communities are Kirk section 9, 30 Macalester, and Wallace 1st and 4th floors and in varying first-year areas as requested.
How do I send a care package to my son/daughter?
Students are always happy to receive care packages at the student post office. They will receive a notice to pick-up packages at the front window in the Post Office during normal business hours.
If you choose to order a cake, a special treat, flowers, or anything perishable for your students, please have the package delivered to the Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center Information Desk located on the main floor. Their phone number is 651-696-6888. The Information Desk hours are from 7 am - 12:30 am. Please make sure that your student's name is on the delivery card for prompt delivery.
What should I do because I would like additional information?
