My ‘Remember When’ stories:
· Mac was an overall influence
My first destination after graduating from Macalester was Newport Beach, Calif., and it was there I began my 28-year career in education.
Fifty years later, my address is still Newport Beach, although, I have lived in several locations in between including New York City, Paris, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, frequent flat sits in London and Milaca, Minn.
Along with teaching, I became interested in the historic preservation movement, which led me to my second career, that of the renovation and restoration of vintage houses in Laguna Beach, Calif. I am a member of the Orange County Historical Society, Bower’s Museum of Cultural Arts, and the Newport Nautical Museum, organizations all interested in preserving the local historical legacy.
Other major events included: graduate school at the University of California, Irvine; marriage; two sons, John and Charles; one granddaughter, Fern; single parenthood, remarriage, a move to Manhattan due to my husband’s position at City University of New York graduate school; numerous travels representing his affiliation with the USIS (United States Information Service) to Europe, Asia, South America and a years Sabbatical at the Sorbonne in Paris; my attending the NY School of Design; and teaching at the San Francisco Hebrew Academy.
Highlighting my personal travels was a 9,000-mile trip on the Siberian Express that crossed seven countries from the Hook of Holland to Hong Kong — very slowly.
In contrast to all of the above was a four-year return to my hometown of Milaca, Minn., to oversee the care of my father who lived to the age of 102.
It’s been an exciting time and in many ways Macalester opened the door.
