I'm writing to comment you all on your efforts to organize the Class of 1958 reunion. I know you'll have a great time — even though I won't be there.
My membership in the class of '58 didn't occur in the usual manner. I started at Mac in 1952 in the class of 1956. There was a war going on in Korea at the time and the U.S. Army decided it wanted me more than Mac did. My only accomplishment during my one semester with the class of '56 was to meet the girl I would marry a few years later.
I returned to Macalester in the fall of 1955, still a freshman — the only freshman married to a senior, I believe. I was then in the class of 1959. By taking summer classes each year I was able to graduate in August 1958 and thus become a member of your class.
Memories of Macalester are frequent and good. I wish the college could still find professors like Dr. Mitau who could teach Political Science without pushing an ideology. Dr. Young and Mr. Buckwell were excellent at teaching their subjects, as were many others.
My wife and I attended her Class of '56 reunion two years ago and had a great time. If the Class of '58 is similar, it will be a great success!
