Following graduation, I entered the U. of Minnesota Master’s Program in Health Care Administration. I married Betty, my High School love, in June of ’59 so we are rapidly approaching that magic “50 years of wedded bliss” date. Arrived in Albuquerque, N.M., in the summer of ’59 for completion of my Administrative Residency, Presbyterian Medical Center. Was then drafted due to Cuban Missile crisis — completing my service obligation at Sandia Base Hospital in Albuquerque.
I completed Masters program and took first job at M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, Texas. Three years later (1965), I accepted an administrative position at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. Had a wonderful 33-year career guiding and developing this organization – The Mason Clinic, Virginia Mason Hospital and Virginia Mason Research Center — and retired in 1998.
During these years we were blessed with three daughters, three wonderful son-in-laws and six grandchildren. We moved to Vashon Island in 1994 and have been joined by two of our daughters’ families living on the Island — the other daughter is on Cape Cod. Good living choices. You can see the whole family in my posted picture while at Menogyn, a wilderness YMCA camp on the Minnesota/Canada border — Gunflint Trail. I was a guide. All the grandchildren attend for good life learning lessons, along with some Mac classmates. We have some good times at Menogyn.
A good education provided by Mac, a great spouse, good kids, and good health all add up to “it’s a good life.” Currently, I’m trying to be of some help to Mac Athletics by serving on the M Club Board.
