The kindly “older man” in Old Main
I was a transfer student and asked all kinds of help from a kindly "older man" in Old Main, even complaining about the horrible taste of the water, only to find out days later he was President Turck.

The change in Mac’s presidency
I never felt any particular attitude toward President Turck, it was just that he was there, seemed always to have been there, and kind of embodied the spirit of Macalester College and all it stood for. Probably I give him too little credit; probably Macalester College embodied his spirit. Anyway, when President Rice was appointed president in our last year at Macalester I felt a bit cheated. Here was this toothy, grinning guy with his overly enthusiastic tartan sports jacket stepping into the place of an institution.

Turck’s graduation-day thanks
When Dr. Turck handed out my diploma he whispered, “Thanks for the Mac Weekly.” I knew he was saluting the whole faculty and staff, but it was an honor that we had his respect.

The most important years
I don't have a favorite story, but I do have many wonderful memories. How can one ever forget Dr. Turck, the dedicated professors, and the intimate Macalester community? These were the most important four years of my life.

Dr. Turck’s amazing memory
Dr. Turck probably could call 19 of 20 students by name. Crossing the campus from his home to office in Old Main, he’d tip his hat, smile and say, “Good morning, Mr. Melin”… ”Good morning, Miss Roberts”… and on and on. Wonder what else he remembered about many of us?
Rich Melin
