The Fieldhouse dedication
I remember the new Fieldhouse dedication speech by the Rev. Bob Richards — the pole-vaulting preacher — who’s favorite hymn was "Nearer My God to Thee."

Moving to a smaller room
For the 1958 "Religion in Life" week the theme was "Committed to Action." I had invited three guest speakers from various agencies that needed volunteers to work with children and youth in the St. Paul area. I was hoping for a good attendance so I set up 150 chairs. That night only 15 students came to listen to the guests. I was embarrassed as we took down 150 chairs and moved ourselves to a smaller room. However, three of us did end up giving some volunteer hours in community service to these agencies.

The local UCC youth group
I remember going to the local Congregational church with some of my friends. They had a youth group for college students. We got to know students from other colleges like the University of Minnesota.

Discovering the Interpreters' Bible
I remember taking a religion class from Professor Elizabeth Leinbach and discovered the Interpreters’ Bible. Up until that time, I thought there was only one way to read the Bible – the Missouri Synod Lutheran way!
