I'm looking forward to next year's reunion. But at the moment I'm in work avoidance mode. I should be starting work on my next book, a collection of essays. Instead, I'm finding ways to keep myself busy by doing everything but writing more essays. So I volunteer for groups to prevent gun injuries and deaths; peace and social justice groups; I run, bike, and lift weights; and I say “Yes” to almost all of my sons' school field trips. Seeing how quickly Max, almost 14, and William, age 12, are growing makes me want to work less and be with them more. Max is already taller than I am; he has a beard! He's getting taller and stronger while I'm getting shorter, and well, a bit thicker. But hey, at least I'm still taller than William. At least for a while...
My Mac Memories:
Working on the Mac Weekly defined my college life. I knew I'd be a writer and I still keep up with some of the Weekly crew, including Curt Brown ’82.
Another key memory is the 1983 Interim trip to Padre Island, Texas, led by Men's Track Coach Doug Bolstorff. We ran 15 miles a day (5 before each meal). That trip made me see that I could be a runner. Last year, I was able to combine those two big elements of my life — writing and running. I wrote a book, Minnesota Running Trails: Dirt, Gravel, Rocks, and Roots, which this year was judged the best Sports/Travel/Recreation book in the 14-state region. Mac shaped my life.
