Outreach
Part of our mission is to work to enhance knowledge and understanding of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia and their cultures in the wider Macalester community, in area schools, businesses, civic and nonprofit organizations, the media, and the general public. Macalester students, and our Russian Studies majors in particular, are often the first to initiate a new program.
Examples of our outreach activities
- Participation in the annual Olympiada of Spoken Russian (2007, 2008)
- In cooperation with the Slavic Community Center, we hosted a reception honoring Russian veterans of World War II after a semester-long independent study project in which Macalester students translated a collection of memoirs (2008)
- Presented a Russian film series (2008): "Making History: Russian Cinema as Testimony, Propaganda, and Art"
- Hosted, with International Studies, a Central Asia Symposium to raise awareness of the region and its issues (2004)
- In addition, we have ongoing events that are open to the public, such as cultural events at Russian House, lectures, the development of web-based resources, and our annual conference.
If you have an idea for collaboration, send us a note -- we want to hear from you!
