Outreach
Part of our mission is to work to enhance knowledge and understanding of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia and their cultures in the wider Macalester community, in area schools, businesses, civic and nonprofit organizations, the media, and the general public. Macalester students, and our Russian Studies majors in particular, are often the first to initiate a new program. |

Examples of our outreach activities
- The League of Women voters brought a delegation of Georgian journalists to the Twin Cities, and our students worked as interns for them to act as liaisons to the larger community (2011)
- Our students do translations for the Twin Cities community. For example, they worked during the semester to translate English-language documents for the Russian-speaking residents of Booth Manor in Minneapolis (2011)
- Our students have worked as counselors at the Concordia Russian Language Village in Bemidji, MN (2011)
- Participation every year in the annual Olympiada of Spoken Russian (2007-current)
- In cooperation with the Slavic Community Center, we hosted a reception honoring Russian veterans of World War II after a semester-long independent study project in which Macalester students translated a collection of memoirs (2008)
- Presented a Russian film series (2008): "Making History: Russian Cinema as Testimony, Propaganda, and Art"
- Russian Studies students have worked as interns at the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis (2007)
- Hosted, with International Studies, a Central Asia Symposium to raise awareness of the region and its issues (2004)
- In addition, we have ongoing events that are open to the public, such as cultural events at Russian House, lectures, the development of web-based resources, and our annual conference.
