Frequently Asked Questions

We are SCOTCH TAPE, the only co-ed a cappella group at Macalester College. Entirely student-run, we consist of around 10-15 members and arrange and perform all our own music. Although we enjoy singing a variety of styles, primarily we sing contemporary rock and pop music. Take a look at our repertoire for the songs we sing, or our latest news to find out what's new with Scotch Tape.

Here are a few questions we often receive ...

"This group sounds great! I live in Tokyo, Japan; when do you think you'll come here on tour? I'm dying to see you!"

Welllll ... unfortunately, it seems it will be awhile before Scotch Tape embarks on its first international tour. However, we do perform often in St. Paul (particularly at Macalester College) so keep checking our upcoming performances page for details.

"I'm throwing a major bash this weekend. I need some quality entertainment for my guests; is there any way I could ask you guys to come perform? How much would I owe you?"

We'd love to come!! Check out our booking page for more information.

"I really love to sing and, man, I love Scotch Tape. Is there any way I could join your group?"

You bet! Although we are a very small group (we tend to stay around 10-15 members), we hold auditions every fall and welcome new talent.

What's the audition process like? I bet it's long and terrifying.

Actually, it's super easy. For the first round, you just have to sing 1 minute (or a verse and chorus, whatever) of any song of your choosing. We'll also ask you to do just two or three pitch matching exercises (we'll play 5 notes on the piano and ask you to repeat it). It'll be just us and you. We just want to hear what your voice sounds like.
Then, we will contact everyone that same night to let them know if they made callbacks. Callbacks are usually the next day. Scotch Tape, you, and everybody else who got called back will learn a song together. Then you'll sing it in quartets. You'll also get the chance to sing the solo part to the song.
We'll talk about it and let you know that same night or the next morning!

"Are there any other a cappella groups at Macalester?"

Yes. There is one all-female a cappella group (the Sirens) and one all-male a cappella group (the Trads). We perform with them often, including at the A Cappella Fest held once a semester.

"I went to Macalester but I don't remember Scotch Tape. How long have you guys been around?"

The group was founded in fall of 2003 by Jenny Foughner; it received its charter that year.

"A group like this must be a huge time commitment. How often do you guys spend rehearsing?"

Typically, we practice three times a week for either an hour or an hour and a half per rehearsal. Of course, this becomes much more when we are gearing up toward a performance or our end-of-semester concert.

"Hey, I love your concerts, but I want more. I want to listen to Scotch Tape in my car, on my laptop, on my headphones, in the gym, in the shower ... Please help me!"

Whoa! Never fear! Our new CD, Sticky Notes, is now available. (Look into purchasing information on the site.) Or, if you're not sure if you want to make the leap, download a few of our MP3s before you decide.

"Hey, what about this website?"

Uh, I dunno. What about it? It was made using Macromedia Flash, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver. If you need some web work done, contact Tamara; she's a design geek who's always looking for some new projects (and she writes in the third person, too).
