National
Fire Prevention
Week 2009
National Fire
Prevention Week is October 4-10, Fire Prevention is everyone's job. Every year
nearly 3,000 people lose their lives and thousands more are injured because of
fires,
both at home and on the job. This is even more tragic when you consider
that
many of these fires are caused by the unsafe acts of people. No matter
where
you work or what you are doing, an important part of your job is to be
on
the lookout for possible fire hazards, to stop a fire before it has the
chance
to start. Please take a few minutes to consider and implement the
following
items that may help prevent a fire or reduce it effects.
- If you notice fire hazards at work remove or
report them to the
Safety office x6278 as soon as possible.
- Practice good housekeeping. Good housekeeping
practices are your
first line of defense against fire.
- Avoid electrical hazards. Don't overload
circuits. Inspect all electrical cords for frayed and broken wires
before using.
- Store and keep flammable or combustible
materials away from potential ignition sources.
- Check and test your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors monthly.
- Minnesota State laws require working Carbon Monoxide detectors in every home
- Replace the battery annually or more often, if needed, in your smoke and CO detectors.
- Replace SMOKE and CO detectors every 10 years or as recommended by the manufacture.
- Review and discuss with your family evacuation
routes and a meeting place if a fire occurs.
- Post emergency telephone numbers.
- Check your fire extinguisher for easy access
and proper pressure
on the gage. If there is any doubt about its working condition have
the unit inspected or replaced.
- Have your heating system and fireplace checked
for proper operation. Obtain service if required..
- On Campus, if you see or smell smoke, see fire,
sound the alarm and exit the building, and proceed to your
designated meeting
place. Do not fight a fire, get out!
- If you hear a fire alarm or receive notice to
evacuate a building do so immediately, do not wait. Proceed to your
designated meeting place and account for all co-workers and students.
