The Department of Hispanic Studies
teaches the languages and cultures of the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian world; we offer specialized courses in literature, linguistics, U.S. Latina/o studies, translation, and the visual arts. We believe in serving the Twin Cities communities through service learning, participation in local cultural life, and internships, thereby educating our students both intellectually and civically to become the leaders of tomorrow.

EVENTS

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS Casa Hispana (196 Vernon) hosted Día de los Muertos activities on October 26. Flowers were made, paper cut, and sugar skulls decorated, and a special Ofrenda was built. Liliana Cortez from El Centro discussed the history of the holiday. Watch this space for photos as soon as they become available.

DESIGN CONTEST We're doing it again! The department is holding a contest to design our shirts and sweatshirts this year. Electronic submissions must contain the words "Department of Hispanic & Latin American Studies" and "Macalester College." Deadline for submission to this email is December 1; winner will be announced at the department party on December 5. A pdf of the official flyer is here.

MACALESTER WELLNESS 5K WALK/RUN October 4 was the 6th annual Macalester 5k, a part of campus Family Weekend activities. Hispanic Studies students, staff, and faculty represented.

OMG! ICE CREAM SUNDAES! Majors, minors, student employees, students interested in Hispanic Studies, department faculty and staff kicked off the Fall 2008 semester with a get-together at Casa Hispana on the first day of classes. Good times and lots of ice cream were had by all. If you missed it, you'll be sorry. Photos are here.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEW BRAZILIANISTThe Department is pleased to announce that Leila Lehnen has joined us as Latin American—Brazilianist specialist, tenure track, beginning Fall 2008. Leila did her graduate work at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and has most recently been teaching at the University of New Mexico.

NEW LINGUISTThe Department is further pleased to announce that Cynthia Kauffeld, who has served as a visiting professor for three years, has joined us as a Linguist, in the tenure track, beginning Fall 2008. Cynthia did her undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

NEW NATIVE SPEAKER — Cecilia Battauz from Entre Ríos, Argentina, has joined the staff for classes beginning Fall 2008. Cecilia and Romina (returning for a second year) will teach language labs for 100- and 200-level Spanish classes and keep Casa Hispana running smoothly. Welcome Cecilia!
