Professor Jim Doyle and Munidir Ahmed

provost

Student researchers assisted Provost Kathleen Murray with making liquid nitrogen ice cream during her visit to Oin/Rice to talk with professors and students about their summer research.

Welcome to the Science and Research Office. This office was established to increase access to opportunities for science majors by connecting them with existing opportunities and by cultivating new opportunities with academic and corporate laboratories. These opportunities may be in a number of venues, including on campus, the local metropolitan area, cities in the US and international locations.

Research collaborations are pivotal for students because they provide an opportunity for students to learn to "do" science, augmenting their intellectual grasp of scientific principles with the practical skills and problem-solving by which science advances. Experiential learning opportunities provide an opportunity for students to gain knowledge in a context outside of the classroom.

Electronic Student Research Application

Student Travel to National Meetings
Students who travel to national academic meetings and present a poster can receive travel funds from the college. Students should apply to the Travel Grant fund. For more information about the Travel Fund and how to apply go to www.macalester.edu/campuslife/resources/travelgrant

The typical grant is $350 if a student is presenting at the conference. The Science and Research Office (SRO) also has travel funds available for student travel to conferences. SRO will fund up to $450 for travel. Students must apply to the Travel Grant fund before requesting funds from the SRO. Contact Joan Toohey, SRO Director, to request travel funds from the SRO.

Students Participate in Exciting Program at Mayo Clinic
The Mayo Innovation Scholars Program (MISP) is a collaborative effort between the Mayo Clinic and selected Minnesota private colleges and universities, with financial support from the Medtronic Foundation and Mayo Clinic Office of Intellectual Property and administrative support from the Minnesota Private College Council. Teams of 4 or 5 undergraduate science and economics majors assist in the assessment of new product submissions by researchers at Mayo Clinic. Each student team is directed by a master's level student and is advised by a Licensing Manager from the Mayo Clinic. The student teams gain valuable insights and experience in the translational process associated with inventions and product development. The experience culminates with a presentation of the team's research findings and a business plan to Mayo Clinic Transational Medicine experts, faculty from Mayo Clinic and Minnesota private colleges, and the Medtronic Foundation in March at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Students participating in the Mayo Innovation Scholars Program in 2011-12 include Reggie Doku, Lauren Martinez, An Xia and Zhenmei Zhang. For more information, read about the 2009-10 Mac MISP team and go to www.mnprivatecolleges.org/misp.
