Underrepresented Groups in Science

There are a number of programs that target underrepresented groups in the sciences. Some of these programs are funded by the federal government and other programs are funded by private foundations and academic institutions. Macalester students from underrepresented groups have participated in summer research programs and attended national meetings that focused on underrepresented groups.

Macalester is participating in the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Programs (LSAMP) grant, which is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculated into programs of graduate study. The U of MN directs the LSAMP program and the corresponding NorthStar Stem Alliance. More information about the program is found at www.northstarstem.org

SNMA

Students have also been involved with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) at the University of Minnesota. The SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest student organization focused on the needs and concerns of minority medical students communities. The active membership includes approximately 5,000 medical students, pre-medical students, and health care professionals throughout the nation. The SNMA is committed to assisting students of color in attaining admission and successfully matriculating at the nation's medical schools. Some of the Macalester students have partnered with medical students who are members of the SNMA chapter at the University of Minnesota. The medical students at the University became mentors for Macalester students interested in attending medical school. The mentor and mentee decide how many times to get together and other activities to pursue. To find out more about the SNMA at the University of MN go to www.student.med.umn.edu/snma
